Historic original cabinet photograph of a little boy posed
on a fur rug
against an ornate wicker chair dressed in his Sunday best suit, along with his charming pug dog, who acts like he knows he's on camera by smiling and showing a row of teeth for the photographer.
This is a vintage matted
albumen photo
mounted on a
6 1/2" x 4 1/4" cabinet card mat.
The back is blank.
The imprint on the base of the mount identifies the photography studio as
J. F. Hertzog's Art Places
, located at
Nazareth
and
Pen Argyle, Pennsylvania
.
Cabinet card photography began in 1863, although the peak years for cabinet photography were 1870-1900.  According to
Collector's Guide to Early Photographs
by O. Henry Mace, "Prior to the production of albums for the new format, the large cards were prominently displayed in the drawing room cabinet, thus inspiring the name
