Chromolithograph, including a
beautiful
silver ink that has a matte sheen to it.
In the photos the silver looks like a pale blue.
Features full text of the Declaration of Independence in the center
and the 56 famous signatures, including that of John Hancock
Framed in what appears to be original hardwood frame and glass.
Deep patina to the wood.
Frame measures 33" high x 23-3/8" wide
Weight: 9 lb 2 oz
There is a 5” crack at the top center of chromolithograph
which does not intrude into the main body of text.
Light even overall tanning as photographed.
One small stain or dirt under, and to the left of, North Carolina Coat of Arms.
Please note the darker areas in photos are reflections in the glass.
There are a few small flecks at the bottom (photo 7)
one of which is a tiny dried out spider (!)
Framing: Frame requires strengthening.
Backing to the Declaration is non-archival stock.
Nails at the back are not secure. Brown paper covering the backing is falling off.
A wood chip bottom right of frame (photo 11).
Hays' certification reads:
''I certify that the foregoing is a facsimile of the original Declaration of Independence
as it
was engrossed, laid on the Speaker’s table and signed in the Continental Congress
in 1776,
and deposited with the papers of the Continental Congress in the Department of State.
In testimony whereof, I,
John Hay, Secretary of State of the United States, have here unto
subscribed my name and caused the seal of the Department of State to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington this 8th day of November, A.D. 1902, and of the
Independence of the United States of America the one hundredth and twenty seventh."

John Milton Hay (1838 - 1905)
John Milton Hay was an American statesman and official whose career in government stretched
over almost half a century. Beginning as a private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln,
Hay's highest office was United States Secretary of State 1898 under Presidents William McKinley and
Theodore Roosevelt. Hay was also an author and biographer and wrote poetry and other literature
throughout much of his life.
