Check it out...Here's a classic 5 1/4" wide by 8" tall typed invitation on official United States House of Representatives letterhead from the office of Ohio 22nd District Congresswoman Frances P. Bolton who served from 1940 to 1969 that was issued as invitation to a reception at the Hotel Carter in Cleveland Ohio shortly after the 1940 Democratic National Convention and featuring as a special guest, the daughter of assassinated Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak (See info / bios below)-The front reads: "Congressman (sic) Bolton and Miss Cermak will be very happy to have you join them for cocktails in the Presidential Suite, Hotel Carter. Thursday, August 31st, 6:30 P.M."- Has usual wear consistent with age and normal use ans tape staining on the edge and minor damage in the upper left corner (See photos below for clarification) but still a great item ready for display! How many of these throwaway items survived?

Here is the history of the Convention and women:
The 1940 Democratic National Convention was held at the Chicago Stadium in Chicago, Illinois from July 15 to July 18, 1940. The convention resulted in the nomination of President Franklin D. Roosevelt for an unprecedented third term. Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace from Iowa was nominated for vice president. Despite the unprecedented bid for a third term, Roosevelt was nominated on the first ballot. Roosevelt's most formidable challengers were his former campaign manager James Farley and Vice President John Nance Garner. Both had sought the nomination for the presidency and soundly lost to Roosevelt who would be "drafted" at the convention. Henry Wallace was Roosevelt's preferred choice for the vice presidency. His candidacy was opposed vehemently by some delegates, particularly the conservative wing of the party which had been unenthusiastic about Wallace's liberal positions. Nonetheless, Wallace was ultimately nominated with the votes of 59% of the delegates, on the first ballot.. Anton Joseph Cermak (May 9, 1873 – March 6, 1933) was an American politician who served as the 44th mayor of Chicago, Illinois from April 7, 1931 until his death on March 6, 1933. Frances Payne Bingham Bolton (March 29, 1885 – March 9, 1977) was a Republican politician from Ohio. She served in the United States House of Representatives. She was the first woman elected to Congress from Ohio. In the late 1930s Bolton took an isolationist position on foreign policy, opposing the Selective Service Act (the draft) in 1940, and opposing Lend-Lease in 1941. During the war she called for desegregation of the military nursing units, which were all-white and all-female. In 1947 she sponsored a long-range bill for nursing education, but it did not pass. When the draft was resumed after the war, Bolton strongly advocated the conscription of women. Pointing to their prominent role during the war, she said it was vitally important that women continue to play these essential roles. She saw no threat to marriage, and argued that women in military service would develop their character and skills, thus enhancing their role in the family. As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Bolton strongly supported the United Nations, especially UNICEF, and strongly supported the independence of African colonies.
