INJURIES to riders seem to be the fad
these days in the Old Wolverine State.
“Dot” Robinson who at the moment is
visiting in Old Mexico, suffered a frac-
tured wrist in the recent Jack Pine
Trial; Al Knapp, crack dirt rider, is
walking around with a cast on for the
same thing; Jack Perkins, another De-
troit track star, has just recuperated
from a broken collar-bone, and now pop-
ular George Lanyon is in the hospital
with a badly-fractured leg which he re-
ceived while flagging at Motor City
Speedway.
Seems as though such things as injur-
ies come in bunches. For months at a
time no one will get hurt, then all of a
sudden they will begin coming around to
the shop with bandages and casts all
over the place. Yes, such things as acci-
dents and casualties apparently for no
accountable reason come in bunches like
the proverbial grape.
Just had a good chat and became ac-
quainted with such West Coast luminar-
ies as Paul Albrecht, Kenny Eggers and
a bunch of others. And a finer and more
friendly gang of fellows would be hard
to find anywhere.
Now, Gil Chumley, crack Royal Oak
Speedway star, has just informed us that
has ridden his last race. As much as
Gil seems to be in earnest we are still
taking it with a grain of salt; for only
a few months ago both Bob Hicks and
Nick Pultorak declared that the race
tracks had seen the last of them, and
they both are still at it.
Speedway Championships
Detroit, Mich., October 7.—Under the
most perfect of weather conditions, and
with a large crowd in attendance, the
big annual Championships were staged
here this afternoon on the famous Motor
City Speedway.
The quarter-mile banked oval was in
excellent condition, and the thrills dished
out to the crowd kept them on edge for
several hours of hot competition, that
saw such stars as Leo Anthony, Luke
Willner, Reggie Mull, Harold Brooks,
Johnny Knapp, Alan Davis, Larry Stone
and a host of others vieing for top hon-
ors throughout the entire afternoon.
The first six top men in points for the
season were eligible to compete in the
big Championship Event, while the next
six high-pointers rode for the Secondary
Title. As usual popular Dan Van Vleet
was the Referee.
Popular Leo Anthony, riding his ex-
tremely fast Harley-Davidson, turned
the fastest time trial.
“Reggie” Mull, who has been a con-
sistent winner throughout the season on
this well-maintained %-mile oval, suc-
cessfully defended his Michigan Yi-mile
Championship, as well as winning his
heat, semi and the 15-lap main. Reg’s
dependable Ariel, which helped him win
all but four of the season’s weekly
mains, is tuned and kept “in the pink”
by Don King of Hawkins Motorcycle
Sales, Flint, Mich.
The winners and second place men in
each event received nice trophies, and
all the riders competing in both events
received liberal prize money.
