For The Time Of Your Life....
see LACONIA
HAVE YOU ever seen forty of the nation's leading experts
roar around the Belknap Mountain Mile? Have you ever
seen 10,000 motorcycle enthusiasts gathered in one place?
Where else in this world could you view these plus a 50 Mile
Amateur Race and a 25 Mile Novice event?
There are hundreds of top events on the motorcycle calen-
dar for rhe coming season but nowhere is there anything like
the 1953 Laconia. The dates are June 19, 20 and 21. It is pri-
marily a gypsy tour—three days of fun and frolic for motor-
cyclists from all parts of the U. S.
The Belknap Mountain Recreation Area at Laconia, New
Hampshire is a veritable rider’s heaven. June, when summer
begins, motorcycles and three days so packed with activity that
there is little time for sleep. This, the vacation spot of New
England, is the setting for the greatest gypsy tour in the world.
On the first day of rhe tour, Friday, June 19, there will be
conducted tours through rhe scenic Green and White Moun-
tains, rhe famous lakes, the Lost River and rhe Polar Caves.
There will also be a cruise on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.
The fourth annual motorcycle and accessory show in the Bel-
knap Recreation Building will open to the attending riders.
On Saturday, the motorcycle clubs will be judged for the best
uniformed group to lead the great cycle parade through the city
of Laconia where movies will be taken for a later showing on
television. Then, later that afternoon, the Novice Road Races
will commence. There will be five, 5-mile heat races and a
25 lap final on the famous circuit. This event was run for the
first time last fall in conjunction with the National Class C
Hill Climb and proved to be exceptionally popular with con-
testants and spectators alike. (See LACONIA, Page 33)
LACON5A (From page 19)
After the Novice Races are over and the
trophies awarded to the winners, the mam-
moth sports program is scheduled to begin.
This, probably the greatest field meet in the
world, is open to all riders and many valu-
able cash, merchandise and trophy awards
will be offered. A girl rider will be selected
and named Miss Laconia Gypsy Tourist of
1953. All attending girl riders are eligible
for this title or that of runner-up. The
winner must of course own and ride her own
machine to the tour.
Another girl rider, this one a resident of
New England, will be crowned queen of the
tour and will rein over all activities. Awards
will also be made to the fellow and gal
riding the longest distance to Laconia on
their motorcycles.
If you have a dependable antique, why
not try for the trophy offered to the rider
attending the tour on the oldest motorcycle?
To be eligible, you must ride the machine
to the tour.
That Saturday evening, trophies and other
awards will be made to the contest winners
of the afternoon’s games. This presenta-
tion of awards will take place at the dance
in the recreation building.
All of these Friday and Saturday events
don’t cost you a nickel. They are absolutely
free. Your motorcycle is your ticket.
The climax of the week-end will be Sun-
day afternoon when the sponsors of this super
tour, the New England Motorcycle Dealers
Association, present the 100 mile National
Championship Road Race. This is one of
the greatest racing spectacles on this con-
tinent—don’t miss it!
The foregoing is only a partial summary
of the scheduled tour. Next month the
complete schedule will be presented. There
is no doubt that the welcome mat is out to
the cycle riders again. Read the letters
from the Governor and Chamber of Com-
merce below and start making plans for
Laconia now.
From The Governor . . .
Dear Mr. Schietinger:
As Governor-elect of New Hampshire, I
am very pleased that you have chosen one
of our fine cities, Laconia, to hold your
annual Motorcycle Races and Gypsy Tour.
The citizens of Laconia and throughout New
Hampshire are delighted that you are coming
back to our State on this occasion and I wish
to extend to you a very hearty and cordial
welcome.
Naturally, we are ver}' pleased the hospi-
tality of our citizens in Laconia has been
such to merit your return. Those of us
here at State level are also proud that you
have given to New Hampshire this further
privilege of serving you.
You may be sure the State of New Hamp-
shire will continue to cooperate with the
local Chamber of Commerce in Laconia to
make your stay here as pleasant and conven-
ient as possible.
Sincerely yours,
Hugh Greg
From Laconia Chamber . . .
Dear Mr. Schietinger:
The officers, directors and members of
the Laconia Chamber of Commerce cordially
invite the New England Motorcycle Dealers’
Association to return to Laconia, New
Hampshire for their 33rd Annual New
England Gypsy Tour and 100 Mile Cham-
pionship Road Race on June 19-20-21,
1953.
The enthusiasm over this event is very
evident among the people of Laconia and
our organization is ready and willing to assist
your Association in every way we can to
make it an outstanding success.
Sincerely yours,
Malcolm C. Midgley, Exec. Sec’y.

Bill Meier, Ambassador
Takes Old Timers' Enduro
The Old Timers’ Motorcycle Club of San
Francisco, California honored George Wash-
ington’s birthday with an Observed Trial.
Run in cooperation with the Richmond
Motorcycle Club of Richmond, California,
the event drew an entry of 118 riders. They
held the undivided attention of the huge
throng that gathered to watch their progress
through the trial.
Even the weather was kind to the old
hands, for California’s skies have never
shown brighter on old timers, Hap Jones,
Al Fergoda, Armando Magri, Maurice Atkin-
son, Pappy Ford and others.
Star of the day was Bill Meier who rode
an Ambassador Supreme, a spring frame 200
with Avon tires. Meier’s loss of only
seven marks made him the big winner of the
day. Nick Nicholson on a 500 BSA rated
a good solid second with an eleven point
loss. Tying Nick for second was Ken Plain,
Triumph.
Among the oldtimers running, Armando
Magri did the best. Magri is the Harley-
Davidson dealer in Sacramento.
Have you ever seen a time when
AVON TYRES were not a stand-
out? Thru sand, mud and moun-
tains, on highways, in races, or
anywhere?
