Birth and Growth of a Motorcycling Community
IN A TOWN where there are zones
in the downtown area marked “Mot-
orcycles and Scooters only’’ you might
expect to find a lot of interest in the
Sport. Such is indeed the case, and
most of the credit for such interest
can be given to a young Florida couple,
    originally from Tampa-St. Petersburg
    Florida who made Dothan, Alabama,
    (Pop. 25,000) into a clean-riding little
    motorcycling community within a year
after they opened their store on March
    5, 1957.
Bob and Maxi Moses, who had never
sold a motorcycle in their lives, but
who were riders for a number of years,
began selling NSU’s in the area last
year to the young people of Dothan.
During the summer they also took on
    the Triumph and BMW dealerships,
and began to sell to the adult fans. One
year and some 35. to 40 new motor-
cycles later Bob’s Cycle Center was
really a center for the Northern portion
of Florida, South and Central Alabama.
Bob and Maxi had been the stimulus
that helped form the Dixie Runners
Motorcycle Club, (a name that was
very appropriate for the area, Dothan
being a peanut-growing district and the
Dixie Runner a favorite variety of
peanut). There is a club for youngsters,
for scooter-rider and moped as well,
and activities for the budding enthusi-
ast. It is a tribute to any dealer to
have a police chief of a city stop him
and tell him how neat and orderly a
club formation on a Sunday trip look-
    ed!
    While motorcycle activities and
groups are being panned by press and
populace it is a genuine pleasure to see
a community applaud a clean shop,
    interested dealer concerned with the
ultimate fate of the motorcycling pub-
lic as well as with his own success and
    sportsmanlike riders.
We need more Bobs and Maxis and
    towns like Dothan, Alabama!
