Last May, like thousands of other
custom bike nuts, Tom McMullen
loaded examples of the custom art
into his van and started for Laconia,
New Hampshire. The Laconia race,
now held at Loudon a few miles to
the south, has become the rallying
point for proud bike builders to bring
the results of their wintertime efforts,
to show others what they have done,
to participate in the ritualistic marking
of the awakening of the bike riding
sport for another season.
Tom's motive in going to Laconia
was two-fold. He wanted to mix it up
with other bikers in enjoying the fes-
tivities, and he wanted to show others
the two examples of custom bikes
made with his products. Tom McMul-
len is owner of AEE Choppers, the first
and by far the largest custom goodie
making firm in existence.
Two of Tom's employees drove the
van, making several stops along the
way to show AEE goods at chopper
hot spots. Tom later flew his plane
to meet them at Danbury, Connecticut
where they all stayed over night,
planning to kill the week remaining
before Laconia partying with bikers.
That night, Tom backed the van
containing the 750 Honda and Harley
panhead customs against a steel post
so the doors could not be opened. He
pulled the curtains all around so the
contents were out of sight from any
view. He locked the doors.
In the morning the van with its
precious cargo was gone. It was found
a week later submerged in a local
reservoir, minus the two scooters,
