Antique Currier and Ives Print"Freedom to the Slaves"
Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation
Publishing Information Covered
W Hunt of St. Louis, Missouri
1863-1870
Item Description
Here is a beautiful Currier & Ives Lithograph entitled, "Freedom to the Slaves", for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! The piece celebrated Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and was done probably after his assassination. None of the high end galleries or print shops that we research such items at had this piece available as of the time of our making this one available. So, seems to be a rare uncommon offering that does not come to the market often.
Very famous and inspiring rendering here. Shows Abraham Lincoln standing symbolically over a Black family freeing them with the shackles or cuffs that were on the man laying on the ground. The woman is holding a baby, and there is a young child standing next to her. A log cabin can be seen in the background.
The piece was done to capture the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863. A biblical verse that says, "Proclaim Liberty Throughout all the Land Unto all the Inhabitants thereof." (LEV/ XXV 10) is captured at the bottom of the engraving as well.
Beautiful black and white colored piece that captures the image of Lincoln with his right hand raised to the heavens and a Black family before him. The Black Man has taken the left hand of Lincoln in his and is kissing his hand. Very touching and symbolic image here.
The original printer and address images under the print have been covered by other paper that says, "Sold by W. Hunt" put over the lower left one and "Saint Louis, Missouri" put over the lower right one.
The lithograph is entitled, "Freedom for the Slaves". This is a small folio lithograph based upon the size of the piece.
The piece was done around 1863-1870 per the Library of Congress information on the print. Done by Currier & Ives as noted at the bottom of the piece.
There is some minor browning to the paper. See no foxing and spotting on the engraving. We see no tears or repairs to the engraving paper. A crease to the paper in the lower left hand corner that goes up into the engraving itself for about an inch.
The engraving is on old paper, not a vintage reproduction. Certainly not a dot matrix piece.
We do ask that you be the judge as to the age of this piece before acquiring it. The print has not been examined out of the frame.
Older wood frame with gold and black coloring. Raised detailing to the frame on the interior perimeter. Some minor loss to the frame. The glass over the engraving is intact, no cracking or blistering. The black paper backing is in place. Was framed by Frameworks New York of NYC per the sticker on the back of the piece.
The Antique Abraham Lincoln and Freed Slaves Engraving in Frame is 20.5" tall, by 17" across, by 15/16
" wide. The Engraving showing thru the frame is 13.25" tall, by 10" across.
