The scale is set in an Oak case with a Marble top inside glass cover lid. It is marked as a Class B, 1 Ounce Capacity, Type 17, Serial number W-2 Scale. Most likely a Pharmacy Scale, but they were used by Jewelers and others as well. Circa 1890-1920 as best we can determine.
The Troemner company began in the 1840's and continues to this day as a leading maker of precision scales, weights and measurement instruments. Henry was an immigrant who started his own company and like so many from U.S. history, his hard work paid off as his company grew to prominence even dominance in the market within a few decades. Kind of a neat read if you have time to research the Troemner name. Their scales were so accurate they were commissioned by the US Mint to make the balances for the Philadelphia Mint and eventually the Department of Treasury to make their bullion balance and much, much more. They also profited greatly from the gold rush as a premier provider of scales for travelers heading west, included a pocket scales popular with collectors today. We obtained this scale from a large antique collector's estate sale.
Everything seems to work as designed, but we are not experts on antique scales. There are several brass weights included and some aluminium smaller weight pieces (we think they are for grams) and 2 scale weight tweezers. The oak box has some general wear but is still solid overall and looks very nice. The only noted defect we could see is one of the lid's hinges is damaged at the attachment (see last picture in gallery), but that should be able to be replaced as it is a fairly common size hinge. We just left it as it was found as it does not effect the item's appeal or function but you do have to be a little careful opening cabinet. The marble top has some wear as seen in pictures, but is not cracked. Some of these had hold plates in front of scales, but this case does not (it appears there may have been one at one time, but not sure). It does however, have both weight plates, 2 pairs of weight tweezers, and assorted weights.
There are brass leveling knobs on the right front of cabinet and a scale adjustment knob in middle of cabinet case front. The top also features a level tube to make sure box is set where needed. We only gently dusted off the cabinet and mechanicals, so you may wish to give it a go over. We did not alter the cabinet in any way or look inside as we did not want to risk damaging item.
