"PEACE"
In 1966, The
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
officially threw its support behind the broader protest of the
Vietnam War
.
As SNCC became more active politically, its members faced increased
violence. In response, SNCC migrated from a philosophy of nonviolence
to one of greater militancy as an advocate of the
burgeoning
“
black power
” movement, The shift was personified by
Stokely Carmichael
, who replaced
John Lewis
as SNCC chairman in
1966–67. SNCC was disbanded by the early 1970s. We designed this button
for John Lewis and SNCC in early 1966. It was one of the first
signs that the Black Power Movement and the Peace Movement had
joined in a stronger Movement for Peace and Justice.
The pin has the Fox Buttons Credit Line
along with a union bug on the curl.
There is no rust or discolorations.
