KM L14, one year type, issued for use in the Lazareto Leper Colony. Half dollar size brass coin.
At one time, there was fear that leprosy could be spread by using the same coins as the victims of the disease, and a small number of nations (the largest issues are from Colombia, The Philippines, and Panama), issued coins specifically for use in the leper colonies. Later, when it was determined that there was little risk of spreading the disease via the coins, they were withdrawn and most were destroyed.
