Description
This is a small, antique working jeweler's hand held balance scales set made by Euxpere of Paris, France. It is in a mahogany case with a partial set of weights, some of which are foil for weighing small objects. The balance appears intended to be hand held or possibly attached to some stationary hook. There is no hook or stand with the set nor does there appear to have ever been one. There is a slot with a pair of tweezers which have the name, Exupere, a Paris, stamped on the one tweezer arm. Inside the mahogany case there is a flap with the name of the Company, Exupere, ands quite a bit of information about the weight set which is stored under the flap. (and visible in the photos.) The case measures 4.75 inches long, 2.5 inches wide, 1.25 inches high and with everything, and weighs 6.4 ounces. We love to research our antiques but so often, there is just no information regarding previous owners and/or makers. But this one was so special because it has the address, (71, Rue de Turbigo, Paris) of the maker, L. Exupere. (Phillipe-Antoine Leon Exupere, born in 1838.) When we searched that address we found an old photo that shows the store front and a group of people, one of which we assume, must be the owner. The top of the photo has a number of dates from 1867-1901 but the reason for the dates is not included in the photo. It is possible to find examples of scales from the Company but information is a bit sketchy and we did not find an exact scales that matches this Set nor did we find any historical information about the Company. (So a challenge for a new owner!) We did find an Euxpere Scale that indicated the Company had new owners named 'Aubrey & Benjamin' but not a lot of information about them either. Anyway, look over the photos, including the one from 1910, and we invite an offer. We will ship it quickly and inexpensively plus we accept returns for any reason with in 30 days.
