General Lyman L. Lemnitzer Lot. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope.Amazing Lot... includes Letter and items sent to General Lemnitzer from Richard Lewandowski. Pictures were taken during his visit. Letter dated April 22, 1974. 17 total items including envelope. Sent from Kent State ROTC as a thank you. All items in good condition. Normal wear on envelope for its age. These items were collected by Ronald Hoskins.
General Lemnitzer Bio:
Lyman L. Lemnitzer (1899 - 1988)
Lyman Louis Lemnitzer was born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He was a United States Army General, who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1960 to 1962. He then served Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1963 to 1969. He graduated from West Point in 1920 and was assigned, at his request, to the Coast Artillery unit.
In his career, Lemnitzer served in World War II and the Korean War. He was one of the senior officers sent to negotiate the Italian Fascist surrender during the secret Operation Sunrise and the German surrender in 1945. In addition, at the age of 51, Lemnitzer was placed in command of the 11th Airborne Division.
His service spanned from 1920 through 1969, and his awards included three Army Distinguished Service Medals, one Navy Distinguished Service Medal, one Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, one Silver Star, one British Order of the British Empire, one French Legion of Merit (officer), and one German Bundeswehr Cross of Honour in Gold
Richard Lewandowski Bio:
He was a graduate of West Point Military Academy and Georgetown University. Richard retired as a Colonel in the US Army, Infantry, serving his country with distinction in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was responsible for rebuilding the Kent State ROTC program after the riots in 1970. Even during retirement, Richard continued to remain active as a college professor at various community colleges and the University of Akron. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants, American Association of University Professors, and the Knights of Columbus.
