    Description

An original watercolor painting / illustration of a young woman wearing a stylish adaptation of a men's Spanish American war uniform, by American painter and illustrator May Wilson Preston (1873 - 1949). Signed "M. Wilson 1898" (Preston was still single then). About 10" x 8".
Preston was one of the major suffragette artists and an important illustrator who fought the patriarchal structure for a seat at the table. The Spanish American war broke out the year this painting was made; by showing a woman in a men's uniform it clothes a political statement in patriotic attire.
The painting is in very good shape; the colors are still bright and it displays really well. The period frame is in poor condition and needs to be replaced with something more suitable and archival for this museum-worthy work. I am happy to ship the painting without it.
An important woman-made piece of history from when women did not even have the right to vote. A fantastic addition to any home, office or collection.
