The original is a sepia brown with a golden tone and has good contrast.  It is a little light in the area of the gent's head.
DESCRIPTION:  This is an interesting antique Cabinet Photo.  A gentleman poses with Alta Mitchell and the bottom is printed "Miss Rea, Baker City, Or."  Alta is well dressed and is holding a handkerchief.  We found very little about Alta.  On July 4, 1891, Alta Mitchell married Arthur Spray at Union, Oregon.  Unless Alta knew Arthur for 6 years, the gent could be her brother.  Miss Josephine H. Rae was active in Baker City as a Photographer in 1886.  We also learned she worked for Martin M. Hazeltine in Baker City.  Hazeltine died there in 1903.  Josie may have married, making more difficult to find info about her.  There is early US Census below of a Josephine H. Rea, who may be the same person.  The photo is a sepia brown with a golden tone and has good contrast.  It is a little light in the area of the gent's head.  The corner tips are slightly bumped, the upper right more so.  Some of the edges are bumped.  If you turn the photo to catch glare, you see a little wear on the surface.  The Cabinet Card is just under 4 1/4 inches by just under 6 1/2 inches and we believe it to be from 1886, when Josephine had her studio in Baker City.  What an interesting photo by a pioneer female photographer!
Using the US Census, we found info about a young Josephine H. Rea, but are not absolutely certain this is Miss Rea, Photographer.
Per the 1860 Census, Josephine H. Rea was born in Oregon in 1854 and was living in Forest Grove with her parents and 7 siblings.  There were many more members listed in the household.  Her father was Lewis Rea, born in 1815 in Missouri and working as a Wagon Maker, age 45 and her mother was Chasta Rea, also 45.
Per the 1870 Census, Josie was 14 and living in Forest Grove and Keeping House for her father Lewis and also attending school.  Her father was a  Farmer.  Her brother Andrew, 11, student and her brother Lewis Jr., was 17 and a Farm Worker.
