Original 1945 Cliff Berryman Signed Cartoon with Teddy Bear.
Personal cartoon by famed political cartoonist and creator of the iconic "Teddy Bear" cartoon that inspired the stuffed animal, Clifford Berryman (1869-1949). Addressed to former Chaplain of the Senate Frederick Brown Harris (1883-1970). Black ink, signed, inscribed and dated August 21, 1945 on C.K. Berryman
Evening Star
letterhead; approx 8x10in.
Cartoon depicts the recipient, Frederick Brown Harris in his clerical collar staring up from a book, interrupted from his work by a trembling, teary-eyed teddy bear (Berryman's own creation of 43 years prior), who has come on behalf of the cartoonist to deliver an apology for a misplacing a book of Harris's ("Now he's so ashamed that he asked me to apologize!"). The cartoonist includes a short postscript bottom right signed "Cliff Berryman."  Condition is very good, with browning at the outer edges of the paper and one tiny chip at bottom but otherwise fine, bright, clean, ink sharp and legible with no smudges.
Clifford Berryman was a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist with The Washington Star newspaper from 1907 to 1949. He was previously a cartoonist for The Washington Post from 1891 to 1907. Berryman's November 16, 1902, cartoon, "Drawing the Line in Mississippi," depicted President Theodore Roosevelt showing compassion for a small bear cub. The cartoon inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy and call it the teddy bear.
During his career, Berryman drew thousands of cartoons commenting on American presidents and politics. Political figures he lampooned included former Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman. He is best known for his cartoons "Remember the Maine" and "Drawing the line in Mississippi."
Berryman's cartoons can be found in the collections of the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and George Washington University, as well as archives that house presidential collections.
